Choosing a therapist
As you will see from a Google search, there are lots of counsellors and psychotherapists based in Kentish Town (NW5), and lots more in the surrounding areas of Camden, Tufnell Park, Gospel Oak, Chalk Farm, Archway, Highgate, Belsize Park, Holloway, Hampstead, North London. (NW5, NW1, N7, N19, NW3, N6). As a result, after reading a number of profiles, it's easy to be left feeling overwhelmed and confused. The only way of knowing for certain whether a counsellor is right for you is to meet them, and sit with them, but as therapists tend to charge at least £60 per session, you may also feel also like you can’t afford to make too many wrong choices.
In consideration of this, I charge just over half my usual session rate for our initial meeting; I see this session as a chance for you to get a sense of whether you feel comfortable working with me; and for me to understand your issues, and to be sure that I am the right person to help you with them.
In the process of choosing a therapist online, the first thing to check is that she or he is registered with a professional body. This ensures they abide by a strict code of ethics. Then comes the job of reading the profiles. If you know what therapeutic approach you prefer this can be a way of narrowing the field. Some people, however, quite understandably, don’t know which therapeutic approach is the best fit to help them with their problem. In this case I would suggest either doing some research or choosing to see an integrative counsellor or psychotherapist who, once they have a measure of a person and their presenting problem, is trained to be able to draw on a ‘toolbox’ of approaches, techniques and ideas that fit with your needs. Also, make sure your therapist lists your issues among those the she or he has worked with before.
As well as the above, you are naturally likely to be drawn to faces that you like, as well as other visual cues that include ethnicity, age, gender and style. Further considerations may of course be price, location and experience or specialism.
I would welcome a meeting with you to discuss your situation. However, if you don’t feel I look or sound like the right therapist to help you, I wish you the best of luck in finding that person. I have every confidence that you will.
If you would like to arrange an initial assessment appointment (charged at half my usual session rate), please contact me by email, contact form, or mobile.
